BOBCATS BATTLE RAIN TO EARN SECOND WIN
Next Game:
COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 19, 2019) - Before the opening kickoff, it became clear the Bobcats had more than one opponent on Saturday. In addition to the Allen University Yellow Jackets (1-5), St. Thomas University (2-4) had to battle the elements of rain on the path to the programs' second-ever victory.
St. Thomas began the game on the defensive, quickly forcing an Allen three-and-out, while allowing only seven drives yards. St. Thomas also went three-and-out, however, on the ensuing STU punt, AU blocked the kick and recovered in the end-zone to take a 7-0 lead. The Bobcats did not waste much time in tying the game, Robert Armes (16/172/TD) scored his only touchdown of the game, on his longest carry, 66-yards to paydirt to get the Bobcats on the board.
On the following Bobcats possession, an interception gave AU the football on the STU 40-yard line. Within five plays, the Yellow Jackets once again had the lead, 14-7. St. Thomas pushed Allen back seven-yards on AU's final possession of the first quarter, as the Bobcats started the second quarter with the ball on the 37-yard line. Billy McConnell cut the deficit to 14-10, with his first Field Goal make of the game. Midway through the second quarter, Allen added a field goal to extend their lead to 17-10, and the score remained through halftime.
It took St. Thomas until the Bobcats third possession of the second half to tie the game, 17-17. Quarterback, Kalani Ilimaleota - Adams, making his first career collegiate start, found Lewis Oviedo on an eight-yard touchdown toss. STU's defense held firm, maintaining momentum for the Bobcats by finishing back-to-back stops, not allowing a muffed punt to distract the unit. Allen missed a go-ahead field goal, allowing STU to regain possession on the 27-yard line. The Bobcats could not maintain a drive, following an Armes 18-yard rush and punted, McConnell pinned the Yellow Jackets inside the 20-yard line and the defensive forced another three-and-out.
As Allen went to punt the ball away, Bobcat special teamer, Mark Fontana, sped around the Allen offensive line, blocking the punt and recovering the loose ball to give STU the lead at 24-17. Allen's special teams unit continued to struggle, a poor snap provided St. Thomas with excellent field position, well inside AU territory,at the 20-yard line with STU looking to add to their lead.
McConnell added another field goal, 22-yards, extending the STU lead to 27-17. Allen made a change at quarterback, in an effort to spark the offense. The switch worked, Allen drove the length of the field, scoring in four plays. However, on the extra point attempt, Anthony Sumner brought a botched snap back for a safety, adding to the Bobcats lead at 29-23.
The Bobcat defense once again proved to be the difference, graduate transfer, Keshun Horton, forced a fumble and recovered in the endzone, pushing the lead to 36-23. In an attempt for a drastic comeback, Allen started a drive on their 33-yard line and drove to within the Bobcat forty.
Jhaqwori Austin sealed the second St. Thomas University Football win with an interception on the goal line, giving STU the ball with two minutes remaining.
The rain did not deter the Bobcats, as STU completed the programs' second win and first comeback victory.
